Today I find myself in one of my favorite coffee shops – inhaling the sweet aroma of fresh baked pastries and caffeinated goodness. The atmosphere in this beautiful place seems so warm today – the many voices of all kinds of people uniting to work, converse, study, and love.
It’s the little things.
It’s the little things like this sweet moment that so often get overlooked.
Normally I would be so caught up in my homework or my writing that I wouldn’t take two seconds to stop, breathe, and actually look around at what is happening all around me. Sad, isn’t it? In fact, I actually was a little bitter when I first sat down and realized that it wasn’t as quiet here as it normally is – knowing that I probably wouldn’t be able to focus as well as I normally do.
Because I was a little frustrated, I huffed and took two seconds to actually look around instead of just concentrating on my work. Sometimes seemingly annoying situations are God’s way of trying to get our attention. Pay attention to those times, sweet friend, because I almost missed His message today. Jesus completely shifted my perspective in a matter of seconds as I soaked in the beautiful atmosphere of the coffee shop and the incredible opportunity that I have to be in this place working around His children.
The hustle and bustle of this life can leave me thinking, “Wait, what have I done today exactly?” My schedule may look crazy busy, but my mind can’t remember actually physically being engaged and present anywhere. Surely this is not how God wants me to live my life. Surely He longs for us all to see Him in every moment, just as He sees us in all our moments.
During this beautiful season of gratitude and thanksgiving, I wanted to take a moment to write about how much of an impact the little things can make – if we would only give them our attention.
“Praise the Lord! Oh give thanks to the Lord, for He is good, for His steadfast love endures forever!” – Psalm 106:1
Forever. His steadfast love, goodness, and mercy endures forever and, if we open our eyes, we see that we are always exposed to opportunities to acknowledge His kingdom. God shows up all around us – constantly dropping reminders of His goodness from heaven. All we have to do is open our eyes to see them.
It’s a sweet good morning text from my boyfriend, a much needed phone conversation with my Mom, an incredible opportunity to work with my Dad. It’s a silly snapchat from my brother, or a hilarious conversation with my roommates. It’s a cancelled class, it’s a project that is preparing me for my future career. It’s the fresh coffee in the morning, the 10 minutes to sit down and breathe during the day, the ability to wake up in Christ’s love. It’s the little things. The Little things make all the difference and have the power to make or break our days.
I encourage you to pay attention to and give thanks to the little things as we approach the amazing (and delicious) holiday that is Thanksgiving. Oh, our Lord is so ever-present in the large, seemingly impossible things, but He is also very real and present in the little, often forgotten, everyday habits.
“If you are faithful in little things, you will be faithful in large ones. But if you are dishonest in little things, you won’t be honest with greater responsibilities.” – Luke 16:10
It’s the little things, dear friend, that mean so much. Be shamelessly faithful with the small responsibilities and opportunities you have been given, and remember, nothing is ever too large or too small for our Savior.
Thank you, Jesus, for writing, caffeine, and coffee shops.
